I know a love

They say that love is soft

Like willows blown by trees

that ebb and flow with grace

and bathe in sunlight

They say that love is beautiful

Like a flower freshly bloomed

that blinks into the summer

perfuming all who pass

They say that love is precious

Like a diamond freshly set

reflecting the sparkles

in the viewer's eyes

But I know a different love

I know a love that growls

standing majestic and muscled

That protects and paces fiercely

That devours and delights

I know a love that bruises

knees bloodied, standing still

Wiping sweat with dirt from brow

To step back in and fight

I know a love that burns

With heat to rival stars

Whose light reaches far

And guides through darkest night

I know a love that's silent

That waits and listens close

That whispers truth and smiles

That doesn't need to shout

The love I know is strong

And so am I

But you want easy

Burial

Soon I will have my own funeral

It has been 3 years.

I will bury you,

Not the uniformed you

Not the brother you

Not the son you

Not the friend you

My you

I will bury the you that was mine for 10 years

I will leave it in the earth to slowly disappear

I will leave it to become something else

I will leave it to be disrupted by the rest of the world moving on

And then I will leave the me that was yours there too

To slowly disappear

To become something else

To move on

Soon I will have my own funeral

Processing grief 1

 I’d rather remember you smiling

I heard the yelling

I heard the swearing

I felt that pain

I’d rather remember you smiling

I know there were bruises

I know there were secrets

I can sometimes still hear the lies

I’d rather remember you smiling

It’s true we were broken

It’s true there are still scars

I’d just rather remember you smiling

Because for every harsh word there were also sweet ones

And for every moment of pain there were warm and healing ones

And so many of my memories include laughter because you knew how to make me laugh

It’s not that I’m ignoring the pain. I’m not. It’s there and I will continue to work through it.

You carried that pain too.

But when I remember you, I’d rather remember you smiling

1/20/2021

I have never felt so many deep and hard feelings at once

Like a wall swung through the air to hit me flat against my chest

Bruising the whole front of me

Knocking the wind out of me

While my back wondered if it was allowed to feel the pain too

Mouth bleeding

Swelling up like a thousand bee stings

But reaching to my core

The tears come in equally swelling waves

Crashing through

My whole body shaking

As I replay every moment

The full ones

The empty ones

I still know your face under my fingertips and lips

I can trace your body with my minds eye

Your smell seeped into the veins in my nose and runs through my bloodstream

You held my hopes, dreams, fears, thoughts

Sometimes you held my hand

I carry your phrases.

I walked drenched in them for years and when squeezed they still drip out

Even though I had to say goodbye to you I stood far away fighting for you in my mind and heart and prayers

How do I even begin to feel all of these feelings?

How do I mourn?

A detached limb

A heart untethered

Air breathed out of lungs that were my home

I loved you with all of me that I knew how

Young and broken trying to squeeze through your skin to be close

That car ride I asked you why we had never talked like this before

Your email broke open wounds I had abandoned but to heal what?

The space warmed you sometimes

The space also warred you I think

The thing I hate desperately, that guts me, is that you were alone

I wish you hadn’t fought alone

I wish you had my words that reflected off the mirror somehow smudged into your skin so that no matter where you looked you could see what I saw in you

I hope you are at peace

I hope you are laughing so hard you cry

I hope you are enjoying everything

You were my everything

It’s emptier without you still. We all are.

Trapped

I am trapped in between.
I am standing in a world that says, “if you have experienced this you are a person of color” along with, “if you look like this you are white and have experienced something else” and I feel trapped.
I read the stories and listen to the feelings of my dark skinned friends and I nod because many of those stories echo my stories and many of those feelings are my feelings.
But then I look in the mirror and I am white. My friends look at me and they cannot help it, they see white. The blanket placed over my world and life is white.
But underneath I hold so many colors. I am a minority. I am diverse. My stories are often unheard or my feelings are often discredited. I cannot tell you how often I am told to feel and think differently, because that is how I am “supposed” to feel and think. White people feelings and thoughts.
But I picked up that story of the black girl running from everyone else who wanted to touch her hair and something in me said, “that’s my story too”. Only I’m not black. My hair isn’t big and curly, it’s  just red.
I listen to the hearts of men saying that they are tired of learning everyone else’s histories and I think of how many histories I have learned to countries I feel I don’t belong to. But what even would a history textbook for me look like? Its impossible.
I lean in as I hear that lovely woman cry out that she has always had to listen and adjust to the culture of the white person, and I think of every world I have lived in where I was the one listening and adjusting. Every. World. Always.
And I want to celebrate these movements toward listening, I want to elevate and amplify voices that have gone unheard, stories that have gone untold.
I want to right the wrongs that have been engrained in the sweeping proclamations spoken over a people group because of the color of their skin and deciding for them what life should or shouldn’t be.
I want to see diversity flourish.
And yet, I am painfully aware that there will never be a movement across the world that declares that the TCK voice needs to be heard and that our stories need to be understood.
There will never be a hashtag to combat the way I am treated as a white minority amongst colored countries that I love but that target me for the color of my skin deciding what I am by it.
I will always be the white person who is more at home but never belonging to the diverse spaces and the diverse voices because I don’t know any other way to be.
I am trapped between these worlds with no way to move.
I don’t want to move for so many reasons. I guess. But still.
I make myself small, again, for the bigger stories around me while hearing that it’s time for the people of color to stop making themselves small. And the people who grew up being big stand next to me, trying to be small for the first time, nodding at me like I have finally found my place, unaware that this is where I have lived my whole life.
It is where I will continue to live.
I guess that’s okay. It’s just hard to know that history will never be made for me.
I am trapped in between.
I will hurt in ways people may never understand as I listen to the hurts of my colored friends.
I will work towards justice because I always have, in extreme ways and in everyday ways, valuing every person, seeing unseen people, hearing quiet voices, like I always have, but in places you will never travel to, with people you will never know, in ways you may never understand.
I will use this white privileged you give me to try and bridge gaps, to pull people from one side to the other since I am already trapped in between.
I will be silent as someone declares that I have never experienced what they are saying even if I have because they will not hear it through my skin.
I will be gracious when I hear frustrating dismissals and take on false assumptions of my childhood, worldview, and understanding because to correct will not help anyone but me. .
I will try and celebrate my own stories quietly in my heart.
I will try to mourn my own stories quietly in my heart.

I will try to be quietly trapped in between.

How
How was life just dancing forward
Worries like school and papers
Grading and emails
They seemed real
But
Then I heard the news
Death
It shifts everything so suddenly
From bright to dark
Like a heavy cloud
Rolling in between us and the sun
And now I’m sitting here
Unsure what to do next
Everything seems trivial
Disrespectful
Sad
And my family people
People in my tribe
All aching and drowning
Having to face a new world
With empty
Missing
Gaps and gaping holes
Gaping wounds
Traveling to mourn
Waking up to grief so loud
A wife now widow
Oh my gosh
How
How to mourn a brother
How to mourn a son
How to mourn a husband
I try and imagine and it stings and empties
How to return to your house
To your bed
To your job
God

Tonight I feel trapped
Between being too much
And not enough
Let go of
Pushed away
For being
The only thing
I can be
Me
Broken
Watching everyone else
Be whole
Restored
And finding myself
Trapped in
Emptiness
Aloneliness
And still
Wishing
For a
Home
